TO APRIL’S DELIGHT, the production team chose to showcase her cleaning spree in the next day’s interview. Although she couldn’t see the video, the peppy background music and laughter from the audience suggested they’d pieced together her activities and used some sort of flash cut effect. Her vivid imagination filled in the blanks, arms and legs windmilling at hyperspeed as she whirled around Harmony House like the cartoon Tasmanian Devil.

“Poor April,” Jocelyn purred when the clip ended. “You must have exhausted yourself with all that housework yesterday.”

“Not at all.” She didn’t attempt to stifle the smugness in her tone. “I’m quite accustomed to household chores. After all, it’s what my business was founded on.”

“And where was Dr. Jeff while you ran yourself in circles?” Grant chimed in.

April dared a glance in Jeff’s direction. His furrowed frown spoke volumes, but she merely smiled her triumph at him.

“Gee, I guess I was so busy, I didn’t notice.”

Her earpiece droned with the single sound of a crowd’s sympathetic, “Awwwww...”

She actually had to sit on her hands to keep from rubbing them in glee. For the first time in her life, she experienced the raw power of appreciation. Positive vibes flowed through her as the audience’s approval bathed her in a warm glow. If she tried, she knew, at this moment, she could fly. The heady feeling overwhelmed her, delighted her.

Still, her saner self managed to prevail over the pleasure of the moment. More than ever, she understood Jeff’s warning about television getting her soul. In a weak individual, such a high could easily become addictive. And common sense cautioned that the drive to sustain this euphoria could seriously jeopardize her intelligence.

“I was around.” Jeff’s grumble hurtled her back to earth with the power of gravity. “If April wanted help, she might have asked me. I’m more than willing to do my share of the household chores. I just didn’t realize she wanted to do all of them in one day.”

April clucked her tongue at him but directed her comments to the audience. “So typical, don’t you think, ladies? Men seem to think dishes wash themselves, dust is banished permanently after one swipe with a cloth and flushing the toilet scrubs it clean.”

A faraway, “Right on!” resounded from somewhere off-mic. Oh, yes. Right on, indeed. God, life was good today!

Grant’s goofy chuckle in her head had the same effect as nails on a chalkboard, and she suppressed a wince when he said, “Score one point for April.”

But Jeff’s reaction delighted her more than that of the audience. Nodding, he said softly, “Touché.”

“Does this mean you concede already, Dr. Jeff?” Jocelyn asked.

Jeff laughed, but to April, who’d become accustomed to his spontaneous cheerfulness, the sound rang false in her ears. “Of course not. The challenge has only begun. I made a mistake, I admit, but I promise it won’t happen again.”

She couldn’t resist teasing him. From the moment of their first meeting, he’d had her in the hot seat, while always maintaining the easygoing posture of the confident one.
